How did the two of you meet?
We met our freshman year of college – at a school organization. I (Andi) came up right out of the gym, sweaty and all. Lukas and I hit it off right away and a month later we started dating!
A full story, written by Lukas:
Coincidence. The nature of being in the right place, at the right time. It is the one element that no one can plan, for at its heart it happens whether you are ready for it or not. That is where our story begins, with the beauty of coincidence. Lukas and Andi met on a bitterly cold Syracuse night, where the snow was falling and the wind was howling. They just happened to show up to the same event, on the same night, at the same time, and as far as they knew, there was nothing special about it. She walked into the large auditorium wearing nothing but dirty gym clothes and a winter coat, but if you asked Lukas today he would tell you it was the day he fell in love. After that night it seemed everyone knew he was crazy about her, well everyone but her at least. After a month of silly Snapchats, and Lukas stumbling into dates with a beautiful girl, they decided to give whatever this was a real shot.
Over the years the love between Lukas and Andi blossomed into something neither of them expected. They spent every summer apart from each other, but each time their relationship strengthened as they realized how much they truly needed each other. They went on countless adventures together, each one more memorable than the last because they had each other at their side. They were no longer two separate individuals, they had become a team; one that could conquer anything that stood before them. In life, all this goofy boy ever wanted was to make her happy, so on August 28th with the smell of summer in the air, he got down on one knee, and asked her to go on a lifetime of adventure with him. For a moment all you could hear was the sound of the rushing water behind them. Then, as she looked into his eyes she whispered but one single word. Yes.
What happened the day he proposed? How did he do it?
Lukas brought me to one of my favorite places ever – Great Falls Park. He blindfolded me and brought me to a nook that overlooks the falls. It was a beautiful warm August evening in Virginia! He had our song playing – Reminder by Mumford and Sons and when he took my blindfolds off, he had a deck of cards. He did a bunch of “magic tricks” only to further confuse me. Then he gave me the whole deck of cards, told me to turn around, and then flip over the top card BUT made sure to tell me that “if I don’t do it right, then the whole magic trick won’t work.” Once I turned around and flipped over the card, it said, “Abra Cadabra, now turn around” and when I did, he was on one knee with the ring in his hand!
What were the main influences behind the style of your wedding, it’s location and your venue choice for your big day?
We had two important aspects in our wedding: A venue and location that would both accommodate family and friends traveling far (we had a lot of those) and also created more of a celebration weekend instead of just a day of wedding chaos. The second was a location that encompassed our equal love for the outdoors. The venue and location in the catskills, NY was perfect for our vision. It was surrounded by the mountains and in October, the leaves were in peak color. We couldn’t have asked for a better situation!
How did you approach wedding planning? did you use any computer systems, apps or social media?
We approached the planning with an perspective of, “if we aren’t going to enjoy the planning process, then what is the point of spending all that time to make a grand celebration wedding weekend anyways?” It helped us have fun throughout the process and remind ourselves the purpose of all this crazy planning – it’s so we can celebrate alongside our closest friends and family as we become one union in marriage.
I (Andi) am a graphic designer so I came into this planning process knowing I would have a large role in designing the invitations and all print material as well as designing the entire look and feel of the wedding. It was great fun!
What made you decide to hire a videographer?
Everyone’s biggest regret is always saying they should have hired a videographer. A videographer does a great job capturing the best moments and putting it all in a short compilation that allows you to bring yourself back into those special moments. Photographs are incredible and a must, but a video brings you back into the action.
Did you have any surprises for each other, or for your guests on your wedding day?
Lots of surprises! I wrote Lukas a short little note, expressing my joy and excitement to marry him (I am all about the notes!). We had coffee to give away to our guests and to those who stayed in the cabins onsite, we had welcome bags made for them.
What would your top tips be for somebody planning their wedding?
RELAX. Remember – this wedding is more about just having a big party to impress your guests. It’s about you and your husband. It’s about this marriage you are about to come into. Remember that beauty and make sure you take intentional time with your future spouse to have a date night and NOT talk about wedding things.
What were your favorite parts of your wedding day (or perhaps most memorable)?
Oh wow, so many memorable moments…The top two moments is as the wedding party were lining up to get ready to walk out to the ceremony, those few but incredible moments with my dad. The other was the time I had with Lukas before the ceremony started. We had a first look, but were back to back.
Any advice for brides currently in the planning process?
Like I said before, relax and breathe. It will all get done and it will be BEAUTIFUL.
